Challenge:

The UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) identified a need to enhance its employee onboarding and induction process. NNL partnered with Electric Circus to develop NuStart, a bespoke digital onboarding solution designed to completely overhaul their induction process. By opting for a custom-built platform, Electric Circus moved beyond the constraints of conventional authoring tools, unlocking significant advantages in both design and functionality.

NuStart serves as a single, comprehensive source of information, guiding employees through 12 carefully curated modules. This structured approach ensures new hires receive all essential information for seamless integration into the business and to build confidence in their new roles.

Enhanced Engagement and Control

The digital format empowers users to take control of their own onboarding journey, allowing them to progress at their own pace while ensuring each module is completed before they can mark the training as finished.

By creating a bespoke solution, Electric Circus was able to implement features that significantly enhanced the onboarding experience, leading to exceptional user satisfaction and improved learning outcomes. The focus was on creating a “well-structured” and “dedicated onboarding training programme” specifically tailored to the organisation and the nuclear industry.

  • World-Class Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 67: This exceptional score in its first year demonstrates overwhelmingly positive user satisfaction and a high likelihood of recommendation.
  • Increased Security Training Completion Rate: Completion rates for critical security training rose from 96% to an impressive 99.5%, ensuring crucial compliance.
  • Improved Employee Engagement: An overwhelming 94% of users rated NuStart as “very engaging,” indicating a high level of interaction and interest in the onboarding content.
  • High Recommendation Rate: Despite the mandatory nature of the training, 96% of users indicated they would highly recommend NuStart to new colleagues.
  • Positive Manager Feedback: Managers observed that new starters “seem confident and are actively taking on specific tasks” due to the accessible and comprehensive information provided by NuStart.
  • Reduced Overall Attrition Rate: A significant decrease in the overall attrition rate from 26% to 17% was observed, highlighting NuStart’s contribution to early talent retention and a positive initial employee experience.
  • Increased Training Engagement: NuStart contributed to a 15% increase in total training hours undertaken by employees.
  • 100% Completion Rate in Operations: A perfect completion rate was achieved in the Operations department’s training modules.
  • Improved Competency and Performance: While not solely attributable to NuStart, the platform coincided with an increase in the percentage of staff at a “fully competent” level and a dramatic improvement in Personal Development Review (PDR) objective achievement.
