The Missing Link in Team Facilitation

Guiding employees towards a shared goal that helps your organisation reach its full potential has a lot of moving parts.

From conflict resolution, to making sure people feel heard, team facilitation takes a lot of work and dedication.

This article is about an important part of the puzzle most HR and Learning and Development professionals overlook, meaning the work they do to unite their organisation can often end up being in vain.

The truth is, if you want employees to move towards a common goal, you have to give them a map of how to get there. If a team member can’t see their place in the bigger agenda, they’ll move on to somewhere that they can – costing you time, money and energy in the hiring process.

The missing piece

So, what can you do? Implementing digital systems like a career pathways map and skills assessment tool can be critical for internal mobility. These tools clear the path toward career progression, training opportunities and facilitating conversations with managers.

In doing so people feel more valued and see their place within your company long-term. This leads to higher employee retention, engagement and renewed energy, firmly futureproofing your organisation.

Finding the right tools for your team

Career pathways maps and skills assessment tools have come a long way since catch-all pen and paper PDPs. Our systems for big brands like Tesco and Gatwick are custom made with their specific goals in mind.

They also mirror the apps people use day-to-day, giving employees a more familiar, engaging and seamless learning experience. Here’s a look at what we did for them in more detail:

London Gatwick Airport

Gatwick’s career pathways platform

The challenge for London Gatwick Airport was that employees were unaware of available roles and opportunities for skills development. This meant talent went underutilised resulting in high turnover and a lack of internal mobility.

So, we made it accessible and fun. We designed and built an interactive map of Gatwick Airport, with clickable hotspots for each of the departments within the business. Users could move through teams and roles to learn more about what was available.

We also included each role’s purpose and requirements, alongside information on career paths to aid internal mobility. An easy, intuitive way for employees to explore their future within the organisation.

The result? Higher awareness of available roles and potential career paths, leading to increased employee engagement and retention. Plus a customisable CMS so roles could be easily updated by the Gatwick team when needed.

Tesco

Tesco’s internal talent development platform

Tesco invests a lot in learning and development initiatives, but didn’t have the data they needed to know exactly where to channel their budget.

Our internal talent development platform was built to give colleagues clear visibility of their skills and how they stack up against other roles. They could easily see which of their skills match and where they needed to progress.

Alongside this, we developed a line managers’ assessment tool. This gave superiors a clear view of the skillset of each of their team members, making conversations about progression much easier.

Engagement with the platform is high, meaning the learning and development team now have robust analytics to assign budget. For example spending on training to plug skills gaps. It also gives employees greater visibility and understanding on how to pursue internal progression – very important to retaining talent.
