Helping Gatwick fly on their journey to visualise career pathways

Challenge

When employees are unaware of available roles and opportunities for skill development, it leads to underutilised talent, high turnover, and a lack of internal mobility. Gatwick wanted to create visible career pathways to encourage internal growth. The vision for the system was make stage 1 visual, stage 2 rich and interactive and in phase 3 a link to skills and learning journeys.

Solution

We designed and built an interactive map of Gatwick Airport, with clickable hotspots for each of the departments at the business. This engaging and fun approach allowed users to drill down through departments, teams, and roles to learn more about the diverse career opportunities at London Gatwick. Alongside essential information such as role purpose and requirements, we highlighted related career paths to promote internal mobility. The system had a custom built CMS so content could be edited easily.

Outcome

The interactive map provided Gatwick employees with a clear and engaging way to explore career options within the airport. We wrapped the experience in an illustration of the Gatwick airport, making it feel familiar and inviting for their teams. This improved understanding of available roles and potential career paths fostered a sense of internal mobility, leading to increased employee engagement and retention. The platform provided a fun and intuitive way for employees to explore internal opportunities.

Discovery

To uncover the root cause of challenges and exploring potential solutions we completed a detailed discovery session.  They help us map out the objectives, drivers, blockers, audiences and existing systems, so we can design a solution that helps clients achieve their goals. This included user personas and mapped out flows.

How it works

The interactive map serves as a central hub for career exploration. Employees can navigate through the airport’s departments, clicking on hotspots to reveal detailed information about each role. The platform highlights:

  • Role details: Purpose, responsibilities, and requirements.
  • Career pathways: Related roles and potential progression opportunities.
  • Skill development: Information on necessary skills and available training.
  • Ideas for roles: Possible roles people could be interested in where served to the user.

 

How the career pathway visualisation works

Supporting people to grow and progress, is a core part of Talent Experience and one of the many things I love about the type of work we do. So being able to create an interactive tool that enables colleagues to see the amazing world of opportunities at London Gatwick has been a real passion project! 

Our interactive Career Pathways map enables colleagues to explore the diverse range of roles available across our business. From Airfield Controllers to Control Centre Managers, from Commercial Operations Specialists to Communications Executives, the map provides key insights on over 440 roles, providing colleagues with all the information they need to plan their next career move.

Together with Electric Circus, we’ve made sure that the map is visually engaging, simple to explore and more importantly for us – simple to maintain and keep up to date! 

 

With over 100 colleagues making a career move last year, we can’t wait to see how the pathways support our people to help their career’s take off!
